New Resident's Checklist

Congratulations and welcome to Hilton Head Plantation! As a courtesy to our new property owners, we have developed the following checklist to help make "moving in" a little less hectic and a little more organized. The list includes some very practical information on utility and municipal services as well as information about how to obtain important POA services.

  • Transfer electrical service into your name. Call Palmetto Electric at 681-5551.
  • To arrange for phone service, call Hargray Telephone Company at 686-5000.
  • Stop by the POA Service Center to get your property owner's decals, Personal Identification Number (PIN), that will enable you to call in passes for your guests, and to receive important information about Hilton Head Plantation.
  • The U.S. Post Office is located at 213 William Hilton Parkway (Route 278). From the Main Gate, turn right onto Route 278. The Post Office is beyond the third traffic light on the right, past the Pantry Convenience Store.
  • Library - The Hilton Head Library is located at 11 Beach City Road  (telephone 342-9200).  From the Main Gate, turn left onto route 278; at the first traffic light, turn left onto Beach City Road. The Library is on the left.
  • Water and Sewer Service is provided by Public Service District (PSD).  It is located at 21 Oak Park Plaza. Telephone 681-5525.
  • Seasonal Beach Passes (Beach Parking Passes) -  If you own property in the Town of Hilton Head you may obtain a Beach Parking Pass for $30, which is available at several locations. A Beach Pass may be obtained at 131 Mathews Drive (Old Fire Station), telephone 342-4580.  Directions-  From the Main Gate, turn right onto Route 278, travel approximately 1-mile, turn right onto Mathews Drive; the building is on the right just past the convenience store.  A Beach Pass may also be obtained at Driessen Beach Office located past Folly Field Road, the second street on your left.  The pass, which is good for two years, entitles you to park your vehicle in several parking areas located next to beach access along the ocean.
  • To arrange for cable TV service call Time Warner Cable Company at 800-208-6030.
  • Becoming a South Carolina resident? If so, you will need to change your Driver's License and car registration. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (815-6981) is located on the mainland at 15 Sheridan Circle on the south side of Route 278.   Directions from the Main Gate--  turn right onto 278, go over the bridge to the mainland, continue on 278 for approximately 10 miles, turn left into Sheridan Park (It is just past Home Depot). To get your Driver's License you need to provide proper identification (including a document showing your Social Security number).  A pay stub usually is sufficient. For your vehicle registration, you need to pay personal property tax on your vehicle before you will be allowed to register your car. Personal property taxes are based on the cost and mileage of the vehicle being registered. Personal Property taxes are paid at the Government Center (842-4206) at 539 William Hilton Parkway.  A South Carolina Driver's License is important when you need to show you are a local resident.
  • Stop by the Government Center located at 539 William Hilton Parkway and register to vote. You can also register to vote when you get your South Carolina Driver's License.
  • Apply to the County Assessor's Office at 525-7295 for "full-time resident" status. Full-time residents are subject to a different Assessment ratio (4% versus 6%) which is a 33% reduction in your real estate taxes. In order to qualify, you must be a resident for one year. The County Tax Office is located in the Government Center adjacent to the entrance at 100 Ribaut Road in Beaufort, SC (or in Bluffton on the Bluffton Parkway).
  • Call Island Hospitality (842-6060) and ask for a welcome package. The package contains valuable discounts for goods and services in the area
  • Drive or bike to Dolphin Head and take a walk along the Bluff or along the beach to Pine Island
  • The local Transfer Station (Trash disposal) is open from 7am - 7pm and is located off Dillon Road.  Directions (going towards the south end on 278):  take the first left after Mathew Drive onto Dillon road, take a left onto Gateway circle, then turn right onto Summit Drive; take another right into the Transfer Station.   You can also dispose of green, brown, or clear glass, aluminum cans, plastic, used motor oil, oil filters, oil bottles, newspapers, magazines, clothing, cardboard, yard waste, bagged household trash, furniture, and tires. There is no fee for this service.
  • There is a map of Hilton Head Island with a street index in the center of the Hargray Communications Telephone Directory.
  • Stop by the Plantation House and sit in a rocking chair on the back porch overlooking Spring Lake and enjoy the serenity!  It's also equipped with a wireless Internet connection.  Bring your laptop!
  • Welcome to the Plantation!
